Jimmy Lee Smith was born July 5, 1949 and entered the presence of Jesus on December 24, 2020. Preceded in death by his father and mother, Clarence & Avis Smith, and siblings Ronald Smith and Geraldine Harrell.
Jim will one day be reunited with his loving wife of 43 years, Becky and his three kids Eddie (Lanna) Smith, Stephen (Lindsay) Smith, and Amy (Dustin) Cradic and his brother David Smith. Six grandkids, which were the joy of his life, Lauren, Trenton, Colton, Everly, Brianna & Rylee, as well as many nieces and nephews, are heartbroken that their Poppy is no longer with them.
From a young age, Jim always wanted to be a truck driver and over the next 45 years, 37 of which he worked faithfully for Averitt Express, he fulfilled his life-long dream before retiring in May 2019.
Because his kids were an important part of his life, he volunteered as Vice-President, 1990-1998, on the Alice Bell Spring Hill Ball Park Commission where he loved to serve youth sports. Though countless and long-lasting friendships were made during this time, it was his desire to positively impact young people in a meaningful way.
In recent years, Jim attended Grace Baptist Church and the family asks that in lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Grace Baptist Church’s Special Friends Project now underway at 7171 Oak Ridge Hwy, Knoxville, TN 37931.
The family sends their heartfelt thanks to the University of Tennessee Medical Center staff on both the 9th and 5th floors. The family will gather at Sherwood Cemetery at 10:45 am for a grave-side service on Monday, December 28th at 11:00am with Rev. Charlie McNutt, a long-time friend, where we will honor Jim’s life.
