OFFORD, Doris Ann Yarnell, age 93, of the Hardin Valley Community passed away peacefully on January 13, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. She was a member of Hardin Valley Free Will Baptist Church. Doris graduated from Karns High School and the National College of Business, Knoxville. A veteran of the Women’s Army Corps (WAC), serving during the Korean War with duty at the Pentagon where she met her husband. Prior to an overseas assignment in Europe, she was selected to provide military WAC support during the “Defense Advisory Committee on Women in the Armed Services” Conference. While her husband was stationed in Fort Meade, MD, Doris was employed by the Department of Defense. She retired from the College of Human Ecology at The University of Tennessee in 1993. Preceded in death by her husband of over 50 years, Joseph, daughter and son-in-law Theresa and Gary Bozeman, grandson Jordan Touton, brother Roger Yarnell, and sisters Joella Phillips and Ruth Roberson. Survived by daughter Donna (Dwain) Wilkerson, sister Frances Peels, special sister-in-law Kaye Yarnell, and brother-in-law David (Shirley) Offord. Grandchildren Laura Touton, Brianne (Jeremy) Stone, Kara (Nick) Durga, Jillian Bozeman, Philip (Mindy) Bozeman, and Tara (Rob) Ring. Great-grandchildren Trey, Bella, Kyndal, Landon, Parker, and Raiden. Her Michigan children, David (LuAnn) Offord, Suchin (Mike) Mastbergen, and Khuanla (Dan) Jenks. The family would like to thank Beth Donahue of Covenant Hospice for the excellent care and love she provided to Doris.
Doris was known for her sharp wit and sense of humor. She enjoyed traveling and taking cruises with her two sisters, Frances and Ruth, and their good friend, Sue Herron. The foursome always came back with many humorous tales of their adventures, but we always knew there were stories left untold!
Services will be held at Berry Highland West Funeral Home at 9913 Sherrill Boulevard on Thursday, January 18, 2024 visitation from 12:00pm-2:00pm and funeral service beginning at 2:00pm with Rev. Rodney Holloman officiating. A military burial will immediately follow in the Veterans Gardens of Berry Highland West. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hardin Valley Free Will Baptist Church, 10415 Hardin Valley Road, Knoxville, TN 37932, or please consider a donation to Honor Air Knoxville, (www.honorairknoxville.com). Doris was booked for the Honor Air flight to Washington, DC, in April 2020, on the “Flight to Honor All Women Veterans” until the covid pandemic cancelled the trip.
