Betty Jean Painter, age 86, of Knoxville, passed away on October 8, 2024. She was a dedicated member of Second United Methodist Church, where she was actively involved in the Friendship Circle. Betty retired from the University of Tennessee after 53 years of service, receiving the Dean’s Award in 2007. She was a beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who brought joy and love to her family.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents, William Boyd Rutherford Sr., and Bessie Lee Oglesby, and seven siblings. She is survived by her sons, Charles "Chuck" Painter Jr. (wife, Angie) and Jeff Painter (wife, Stacy Chelf); grandchildren, Garrett Painter, Grant Painter, Brad Painter, Callie Painter, Evyn Edger, Gabriel Beeler, and Alexandra Chelf; and great-grandchildren, Bennett Edger, Berklee Edger, August Painter, Elliott Painter, and Christopher Chelf.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 12th, from 11:30 AM to 12:30 PM at Second United Methodist Church, with a service to follow at 12:30 PM, officiated by Pastor Betsy Denton. Family and friends will meet at 1:45 pm Monday at New Gray Cemetery for a 2 pm interment. Pallbearers: Jeff Painter, Bradley Painter, Garrett Painter, Grant Painter, Marty Thurber and Gabriel Beeler. Honorary Pallbearers: Chuck Painter, Bob Rutherford and Bill Rutherford. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Second United Methodist Church.
