   A Tribute To My Own Blue Angel
Derek, I have so many wonderful memories of you from the first visit when you were a newborn in the hospital (with Grandpa Bert) to our most recent family Christmas at Lori and Rich's home this past December. The Spielmacher family were all so elated to finally have a nephew after seven long years of nieces only. Grandpa Bert really liked the name , Derek, and in his witty and jocular way told us that with a name like that, (so similar to derrick) you would probably be able to "hoist a few" (beers implied) We all watched you grow under the smothering hugs and kisses of your doting girl cousins over the years and you loved every minute of the obsessive attention they showered on you. You were always such a chick magnet even then. Often the only boy at the all-girl birthday parties of your three older cousins, you were the "little brother" they all craved. You loved to giggle and laugh and obligingly let them vent their mothering instincts on you. As your Auntie who lived nearby, Tony, Lori and I would see you much more regularly then and we often went on road trips (Wonderland, the Ex, visits to Hanover or T.O., fall fairs , reunions or stays at the cottage with the Fergussons etc.) together. You were always a fun kid to have around and made us laugh so often. When you became a handsome, strapping young man, we saw less of you as you pursued your own interests and made many new friends. I remember how excited you were to get my second-hand red Acura as your own first car.I remember how hilarious you were at our recent Hallow'en-themed wedding reception at Elaine and Howard's this past October when you had to try on every mask, wig and hat for our amusement...classic Derek. Our family get-togethers will never be the same without your big, warm bear hugs and your boundless energy to keep all the kidlettes occupied. We love and miss you so much, but we know that you will continue to give us reassuring signs that you are safe in the arms of our loved ones in heaven. The little blue crystal angel that you gave to me is always with me. I carry it in my purse, but I carry my REAL "blue angel,

Growing up in the Spielmacher family, Derek a.k.a. “Dickett” was like the little brother I never had.  I had a little sister but I really wanted a little brother ?  Derek was an adorable kid, those big blue eyes, and those cheeks!  We had many great times hanging with Derek and the rest of the cousins.  Derek grew into a wonderful man with strong core values. He had a kind heart, gentle disposition and was able build new friendships with ease.  He was an extremely loyal and family oriented person and would always be there to support you when needed.  He had a unique way of bringing joy and fun into even the most difficult of times.  Derek loved children and they loved Derek!  You never had to worry about entertaining your kids at a family function as long as cousin “D” was around.  Derek, it will not be the same without you at the next Spielmacher get together, that is for sure.  You were a wonderful cousin and friend and we will miss you greatly.

Having worked with Derek, and knowing him on and off the job, it was an absolute shock to hear of his passing. He never seemed to strive to be the centre of attention, but you sure knew when he was there, he just had a presence for lighting up a room. You'd like to think of him as waiting just ahead, telling you to 'get movin'', as he often used to. Our prayers and condolensces go out to Derek's family.

I met Derek when we both attended Forest Heights CI.  Derek always had a smile on his face and always made everyone laugh.  Even in the later years when we would bump into eachother he would always be kind, genuine and friendly.  My thoughts and prayers are with your family Derek.  You will be missed by many buddy!
