Shirley Mildred Smith, 84, of Killeen Texas passed away May 24, 2020 in Killeen, Texas. Visitation will be held from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Sunday, May 31, 2020 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Funeral services will be held at 9:30 am on Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, TX. Arrangements are under the direction of Crawford-Bowers Funeral Home in Killeen, TX.
Shirley Mildred Smith was born on April 14, 1936 in Ocoee, Florida to Jim and Gladys Sullivan. The family then moved to White City, Florida, Okeechobee, Florida, and Kissimmee, Florida, where Shirley graduated from Osceola High School.
After graduation Shirley took a job in Ft. Pierce, Florida. Larry Smith, who Shirley had gone to elementary school with before his family moved away, was also living Ft. Pierce. Larry and Shirley were married on February 10, 1957 in Dutton Memorial Presbyterian Church.
Shortly after they married Larry went on active duty in the US Army, and they moved to his first assignment at Ft. Hood, Texas. While Larry served in the Army they lived in Frankfurt, Germany, Hanau, Germany, Ft. Huachuca, Arizona and two more tours to Ft. Hood. Their last overseas tour was at SHAPE, Belgium, where the family enjoyed traveling all around Europe.
Larry retired at Ft. Hood in 1980, and the family bought a home in Killeen where the children, Stephen, Melanie, Jeffrey, and Timothy all graduated from high school. Shirley took a job as a clerk at the Bell County Tax Assessor’s Office. She was “Nana” to her grandchildren.
Shirley was an active member of St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church for over 40 years, where she was a member of the United Methodist Women and served on the Altar Guild.
Shirley loved to read, do crossword puzzles, garden, scrapbook and travel. Her favorite destinations were Ireland and Scotland.
Shirley was preceded in death by her daughters Melissa Smith and Melanie Machado, her husband Larry Smith, her son Timothy Smith, and her older sister Betty Hansen. She is survived by her sons Stephen Smith and Jeffrey Smith, her sisters Etta Merle Hendry and Carol Sullivan Daughtrey, eight grandchildren and six great-children (with a seventh coming soon).
