Betty Bell, age 86, died June 5, 2012 at the Summit in Austin, which was her home after living in Killeen for 50 years.
The youngest of seven children, Betty Jo Anderson was born on August 3, 1925 in Hico, Texas. The family eventually moved to Stephenville where Betty attended school. It was at a Stephenville High School basketball game, that she was introduced to Dean Bell, a handsome basketball player from neighboring Carlton. That meeting would forever change her life. She and Dean married in Pensacola, Florida in 1943 where he was stationed while serving in the Naval Air Corps.
After leaving the Navy, they returned to Texas where he worked for a road construction company. During that time, their son, Mike was born. Constant moving with the new baby was not easy, so they moved to Brenham where Dean worked for Morton Salt Co. While in Brenham, their daughter, Deby was born.
Dean’s next jobs took the family to Houston and then on to Austin. In 1959 Dean heard of a business opportunity in Killeen, so once again the family relocated. But this time, it was the last move for the Bells. Betty joined Dean in running their new business, Bell Glass & Mirror Co., which still bears their name today. After many years of hard work together, they sold Bell Glass & Mirror Co. and opened Bell Mini Storage, the first mini-storage in Killeen. Once again, they worked side by side. After selling the mini-storage, Betty and Dean began to explore the world and traveled extensively around the globe. They also joined a motor home club and had a complete new set of friends to meet as they traveled the U.S. Betty and Dean enjoyed life and experiencing new things together. They were founding members of the Killeen Viva Les Arts and remained active in it until Betty moved to Austin. Of everything Betty and Dean did, their greatest enjoyment was their life and friends in Killeen.
Betty is survived by her son Mike of Austin, his wife Gayle and their son Ryan, and by her daughter Deby of Austin. Dean, her husband of 60 years, died in 2003.
Betty will always be remembered for her caring, sweet, and giving nature, her beautiful blue eyes and sense of style. She was a true friend to have and was always ready to help those in need.
Betty’s family would be very appreciative of any donations, made in her memory, to the Vive Les Arts Theatre, 3401 South W.S. Young Drive, Killeen, Texas 76542, 254-526-9090.
