George "Terry" Carmichael

August 9, 1935 – May 26, 2012

Our beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Uncle, Insurance Agent, Lake Captain, Singer & Dear Friend left us much swifter than imagined on Saturday, May 26, 2012 after a challenging battle with cancer.

George Terence Carmichael is survived by his loving wife Loraine of 50 years (less 2 months) and his loving sons Duncan and Ian (Stephanie) Carmichael and 2 cherished grandchildren Alexis and Andrew; mother-in-law Anne Keith; sisters-in-law: Janice (Doug) Burke; Lynn (Jack) Zuidervaart; Leslie (Larry) Johnson; Shari (Duane) Mombourquette; Marian Carmichael; brother-in-law Grant (Kym) Keith. Terry is also survived by his nephews: Glenn (Sean) McEown, Andrew (Pavi) McEown; Bruce (Kim) Carmichael, Rowan (Cindy) Carmichael; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Terry was predeceased by his father George (Dode) Carmichael and mother May Carmichael; sister Nancy (Bruce) McEown; brother Dixon Carmichael; father-in-law Jack Keith; brother-in-law Myr Harvey; and nephew Duncan McEown.

Terry was born and raised in Kenora where he attended North Ward School, and Kenora District High School. He enjoyed recalling colorful stories about his childhood which entertained family and friends over the years. He enjoyed football, basketball, curling, playing pool, chess and singing during his school years.

Terry began his working career with Household Finance in Flin Flon. He then started his long career in the General Insurance business at Osler Hammond and Nanton and John A. Flanders, retiring from Flanders Insurance Services after 35 years of loyal service in 1999. He was well liked and respected by his industry peers. Terry was a past member of the Winnipeg Rotary Club and the St. James Kiwanis Club. Upon retirement he and his wife Loraine moved to beautiful Lake of the Woods where they had spent many summers at the family camp and loved boating, swimming, and living with nature at Carmichael Point. They built a new retirement home at Carmichael Point near Kenora and quickly became involved in the musical life of Terry’s home town. Terry loved singing and missed his Winnipeg Barber Shop chorus. He joined the Kenora Guys & Gals chorus; he formed a quartet and started a mens singing group called the Fifth Avenue Singers.

He was an active member of the United Church in Winnipeg and Knox United Church in Kenora serving as Chairman of the Board at Knox. Terry was a perfectionist and a meticulous organizer. He was a dedicated hard worker and a community minded volunteer. Terry had a great sense of humour which continued through his long illness. He was a self described “simple tradesman” when his trade was honour and dignity in everything he did. Terry was a true gentleman, a loving husband, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a true friend who will be missed by all who knew him. His life was well lived.

A celebration of Terry’s life will be held at Knox United Church in Kenora on Sunday, June 3, 2012 at 2 pm at 116 Second Street South, Kenora, Ontario.

It’s hard to believe You’re really gone and to know we will no longer see Your smiling face or hear the sound of Your laughter. You left us with so many memories and You will always live deep within our hearts.
