I first met Bill (Barber Bill) in 1973 when he had a barbershop on Sandtown Rd. in Marietta and was a  friend of his  until his recent passing. I was very fortunate to have such a wonderful friend
in my life,  And, I consider myself very lucky and bless to have him  as my friend through these long years. I will truly miss his friendship, his many calls to me after his retirement from being one of the very best barbers ever,  
And, my  deepest sympathy to his wonderful family, who I met all of them this morning at the funeral home.
May  this wonderful friend REST IN PEACE and now with his wonderful wife of many years,  Faye.

A word limit? Y’all might want to get a cup of coffee or a cold one, cause this is gonna be a minute. 

Uncle Bill and Aunt Faye were my 2nd parents, grandparents to my kids, very best friends of my parents, and Bill was the mayor of our little dirt road. He’s also the reason we lived on that dirt road, but that’s another story.

He was a little bit Hazzard Boys, J.R. Ewing and Andy Griffith all rolled into one. (maybe a little Barney too, but I’d never say it to his face and he’d never admit it.) He seldom came to visit empty handed, he always had a jar of pickled something, tomatoes, zucchini bread or who knows what. If he didn’t bring something he’d remind you that his mere presence was gift enough. “Glad you got to see me,” was his exit line. 

He was lovingly protective of his people, he personally saved me from numerous snakes, spiders, a charging bull and escaped convicts. (True(ish) story!)  I swear if I yelled his name from acres away he’d hear me and come flying down in the truck. 

I got to go along with him and Dub duck hunting, searching for “pine log starter,” and old moonshine stills. He had me try whatever he cooked, from smoked “yella” perch to random livers to his mashed potatoes that he slung all over the kitchen when he forgot to turn off the mixer. 

He did my hair for beauty pageants, (ok not him, but Earl from his shop…that’s a whole ‘nother story), scared my boyfriends and made my childhood memorable. He loved teasing my “yankee” relatives and “crossing the Mason Dixon line” when shaking their hands. 

Say hey to mama and daddy and Grandma Faye and everyone for me. We will forever miss your hugs, your tall tales and your sly smile, you bee charmer. 

Last time I saw him Mia and I were in the grocery store. When I called his name he said “oh hell…”   I “hugged his neck” and we teared up, chatted and could have all day. 

He didn’t say “Glad you got to  see me” that time, but I damn sure was.

We moved in across the street from Mr. Bill and Miss Faye almost 26 years ago.  I took my young sons all around the neighborhood to meet the neighbors.  They were very down to earth people and sweeter than a sack of sugar!

You know the saying 'it's a small world', one of our best friends told us Bill used to cut his hair when he was a boy living in Marietta.  Several years ago he and his family followed us out here and settled one mile away.

Bill always had advice, a smile and a wave.  A light has gone out with his leaving.  He will certainly be sorely missed.

Had the esteem pleasure of meeting Bill thru his son my fraternity brother WC.  Have to say some of my fondest memories is going to the barbershop and just listening to the story's and sage advise that came from Bill and the local patrons.  I do believe I gained more wisdom from those guys then I ever received in college.  Going to Bills barbershop was a step back to simpler times.  Heck sometimes I would go not even needing a haircut.  I'm going to miss him and I'm going to miss those conversations.  As far as I'm concerned I'm a better person for knowing him.  God Bless friend, you will be missed.
