Mother Odene Loraine Ward was born to the late Mr. George Peeples and Mrs. Nannie Watson Peeples on July 28, 1922, in Kennesaw, Georgia. She was nurtured by her parents with her three sisters and three brothers. After elementary and secondary education, she completed her Bachelor of Business Administration in Atlanta, Georgia.
Mother Ward was united in holy matrimony to Mr. Clyde Ward. The Lord blessed this union with four daughters: Tanya, Camille, Sunnetta, and Tracee. Subsequently, she relocated to Waterbury, Connecticut. Mother Ward was employed in Middlebury, Connecticut, as an Executive Secretary for Timex Group USA, Inc.
Mother Ward was a business woman in her own right. After the birth of her youngest daughter Tracee, she became a stay at home Mom. In 1969 after the sudden homegoing of her husband Clyde who owned a bar in Waterbury always known to many as The Dining Room, she took over as the owner and manager. Odene renamed the bar to Dene's Cafe and purchased two apartment buildings surrounding the bar and became a landlord.
Mother Ward joined Hinsley Chapel Church of God in Christ under the leadership of Bishop John Dale Husband upon her return to Georgia. When the church relocated to Greater Community COGIC in 1992 under pastorate of Bishop Chandler D. Owens, Mother Ward and Tracie remained faithful members. Tracie would always encourage Bishop Owens to “PREACH”! Mother Ward suffered an illness in 2006, but she continued to attend church whenever she could. She loved watching the online services with Bishop Matthew L. Brown. She loved to read and study the Word of God. Her favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm. Her favorite song was, “I’ll Fly Away”.
Mother Ward was of the generation that loved to cook. Cook she did and what an awesome job she did! A gifted, talented, and astute woman of God was blessed with the gift of longevity. Mother Ward became a
centenarian in 2022. To God be the glory for the life and legacy of Mother Odene Loraine Ward. Our heavenly Father called her from labor to reward on Thursday, April 11, 2025. “Precious in the sight of
the Lord is the death of his saints.” Psalm 116:15
Mother Ward was preceded in death by her husband, her parents; one daughter, Tracie; three brothers; and three sisters. She leaves to cherish precious memories: three daughters, Tanya (Thomas) Taylor of El Paso, TX; Camille Ward of Kennesaw, GA; Sunnetta Ward, El Segundo, CA; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and a loving church family.
