Mrs. Madeline was born on August 9, 1939, to Carl and Thelma Anderson in Tulsa, Oklahoma. She was the youngest of 8 children of a then-migrant worker. She spent the first several years of her life traveling with her family across the US from the Midwest to the West Coast. Madeline was a storyteller and could easily be coaxed into telling stories of her youth and the antics of her rambunctious siblings. She had the beautiful voice of a songbird and loved to sing gospel and country songs. She shared this gift, often sang solos in church, and always sang to her babies.
In 1958 Madeline married her Airman, Roy Thomas, in Los Angeles, California. Upon Roy’s discharge from the Air Force, they settled in Georgia to begin their life together. She and Roy went on to grow a family of four girls and one son. Madeline loved children and was devoted to her family. She was a stay-at-home mother and caregiver until her children were older. She tended to other’s children in her home for many years, and “Grandma Madeline” was adored by many.
Madeline had the heart and soul of a caregiver. For 25 years, she worked as a CNA and PT Aide at Manor Care Nursing Home in Midwest City, Oklahoma. The residents and their families treasured Madeline’s kind, gentle spirit, and genuine love for her residents. Her favorite role at Manor Care included exercising with her residents and assisting them with wellness. She rejoiced in their small victories as if they were her own.
Madeline was preceded in death by her parents, Carl and Thelma Anderson, her seven brothers and sisters, and her husband, Roy Thomas. She tragically lost two of her precious grandchildren, Christopher and Zackery, as young adults. She is survived by her children, Carol Fleming (Benjie), Sharon Randell (Stewart), Sandra Klemme (Michael), Angela Woodard (Ryan), and William Garrison (Kirsten). Her grandchildren Johnny, Lyndee, Madeline, Jennifer, Tyler, Hailey, Tatum, Gracie, Lily, Gabriel, Avery, Aiden, and her seventeen great-grandchildren were the light of her life.
In place of flowers, the family requests donations to Madeline’s favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. Memorials may be made online or via mail on her behalf.
A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 18, 2023, at 10:30 a.m. The memorial service will be held at Elevate Christian Church, 156 Poplar Springs Road, Hiram, Georgia. Come prepared to rejoice in a life well-lived.
