Born in Wyoming, John served in the United States Marine Corp, and the US Air National Guard. He worked for the Department of Interior in the National Park Service for 27 years and in his writings states: "My years with the Park Service were some of the happiest of my life. Being paid to live and work in Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain, Great Smokies, and then later to travel throughout the Southeast Region of eight states, Puerto Rico and American Virgin Islands could not have been better suited to my desires". John was awarded the Interior Meritorious Service Award in 1980. This is given to those who had made significant contributions to the Department.
John was an artist, a photographer, an arbitrator and told the longest jokes in the world. He was an avid outdoors man and loved his family with his whole heart. John was married to Carol Thompson for 41 years and 11 months. He was preceded in death by his parents Judge Sam M. Thompson and Mabel Smith Thompson, his brothers, and two of his sons David Thompson and Robert Henderson.
John had seven children, David, Dennis, John, Heather and Jennifer Thompson, Susan and Robert Henderson and twelve grandchildren.
Services will be held 2 pm Wednesday at Winkenhofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw with Rev. Elaine Wilder and Rev. Marion Longacer officiating. Interment will be held Friday, October 17, 2014 at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Georgia with military honors.
Family will receive friends from 2 till 4 and 6 till 8 Tuesday at Winkehofer Pine Ridge Funeral Home in Kennesaw
