James “Jim” Lowell Setser, age 84, passed away on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. Jim was born in Odds, Kentucky to Frank and Wanetta Setser. He attended school in Van Lear, KY. He received a BS Degree in Math and Chemistry from Morehead State University and a Masters Degree in Nuclear Chemistry from the University of Kentucky. Jim served his country as an environmental chemist with a Navy commission in the U.S. Public Health Service in Cincinnati, Ohio. In the span of his career, he was employed by the General Electric Company in Louisville, KY. He was a founding member of the Environment One Corporation in Schenectady, NY. He served as a Branch Chief with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources and Program Coordinator for the Environmental Protection Division. Before retiring he had self-published four leadership and management books.
A man of faith, Jim was a longtime member of St. Paul UMC in Marietta, GA. He enjoyed teaching religion classes at church and at ELM. Jim self-published 5 books pertaining to spiritual growth and development. He was a trained Lay Leader for St. Paul UMC and served as the Chair of the District Union North Georgia United Methodist Church. Other than his love for his faith, Jim had an appreciation for history, fishing, and music of the 50s (especially Elvis). He was also a big fan of the Atlanta Braves and his beloved University of Kentucky basketball. Jim is remembered as a devoted husband, father, and doting grandfather to his family who will cherish the loved they shared.
Proceeding Jim in death were his parents and his brother, Howard Lee Setser. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Helen Setser, his sons James Anthony “Tony” Setser and Michael Scott Setser; his daughters Kimberly Setser Cochran and Linda Setser Campisi; his grandchildren Christopher, Katherine, Thomas, William and Ansley; step grandchildren Amanda, Amber, and Ariel; his sister-in-law, JoAnne Setser, his niece Elizabeth Setser Berry (Michael), and his nephew David Setser (Ellen).
A visitation for Jim will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024 from 1:00-2:00 pm followed by a funeral service officiated by Shelia Preacher at St. Paul UMC, 244 Kurtz Road, Marietta, GA 30066.
