September 30th, 1934 – June 10th, 2023
It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Rev’d Dr. Ronald Leslie Barnes on June 10, 2023, at Kelowna General hospital. He left this world peacefully surrounded by his devoted wife Beverley and close family members. Born and raised in Toronto, Ontario, he worked as a telephone engineer before entering Trinity College, University of Toronto. He was ordained priest in 1961. He served in the Diocese of Algoma, St. John’s North Bay & St Saviours, Blind River before moving to the Diocese of New Westminster in 1969, serving in St Barnabas, St Clements , St Johns the Apostle, and All Saints Agassi. In 1967 he canoed to Expo in Montreal, from Camp Manitou in Diocese of Algoma with the brigade of voyageurs.
Ron created, authored, and ran the Marriage Preparation Program from 1975-83 , he worked 12 Cursillos as a spiritual leader and was elected clerical secretary of the Diocese of New Westminster 1986-99. He was always an avid sailor. With his own sailboat he spent many summers at camp Artaban as the director and counselor of sailing camps from 1985-94. In 1999 he advanced his studies by receiving his doctorate in computer communication technology and theology. During that time, he was invited to Lambeth to teach bishops computer communication. Ron and Bev then had a fantastic journey across Canada, including the Yukon and the NWT, USA and the Caribbean, teaching and installing the First Class Communication Systems to 14 dioceses.
Ron took the most pleasure in helping others. He was involved in numerous charities over the years and was always quick to offer his service to anyone, at any time of day.
He is survived by his loving wife Beverley, 4 children, 15 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren; Catherine (Michael Seaman), Amy, Graeme, Paul, Beth; Heather (William Morel), Peter (Shae), Nicholas, Emma; Bonnie (Glen Tracey), Shannon (Marc Edgett) children: Jack & Finnick, Brandon (Sara), Caitlin; and Charles (Becky), Devon, Hailey, Steven, Sarah, Kassie and fostered Pablo Sharpe .
Friends and family are welcome at the celebration of life held at St Andrews Anglican Church 4619 Lakeshore Rd, in Kelowna, BC (Wednesday) June 28th at 2pm. Messages of Condolences may be forward through St Andrews Anglican Church. Reception to follow. In lieu of flowers please donate to PWRDF or a favorite charity.
