Madeleine passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 16, 2018 at home, surrounded by family. Madeleine was born in 1932 in Quebec City, QC, the third of five siblings. She graduated from the Jeffrey Hale teaching hospital as a Registered Nurse in 1957. After raising her two sons, she returned to university and graduated with a Bachelors in Education, and went on to get a Diploma in Translation. Education having always been important in her life, she was given an opportunity to teach at a college in Quebec, and continued doing so until her retirement. Having been widowed early in life, she decided to relocate to Kelowna, BC in 1997, where she met her current partner, Frank. Madeleine and Frank proceeded to spend their retirement travelling extensively, studying, playing bridge, hiking, and various other sports. They also spent considerable time with the Kelowna Society for Learning in Retirement, where they led classes in International Politics and Philosophy and other areas of interest. She was fiercely independent and strong willed, and had a heart of gold. Madeleine is survived by her partner Frank Harvey-Smith, her sons Marc (Michelle Lepine) of Vernon, BC and Robert of Montreal, QC, as well as a sister Jacqueline Leclerc, 2 brothers: Jules and Paul Lafrance and 4 grandchildren: Carol-Ann, Roxanne, Marcelo and Alexandra. She was predeceased by her husband Roger Bourdon, her brother Claude Lafrance, and her grandson Marc-André Bourdon. A celebration of life will be held June 2, at The Martin Centre, 1434 Graham Street, Kelowna, BC, V1Y 3A8 from 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations maybe made to the Canadian Cancer Society.
