June 20, 1924 – May 23, 2016
Evelyn was born on her father’s farm near Melville, Saskatchewan.
Her parents were Wilhelm (William) Tank from Minnesota and Elizabeth Tank (neé Hanowski) from Austria.
She was the 3rd youngest of 8 siblings: Karl, Alvina, Elsie, Ida, Olga, Evelyn, Ivor and Paul. When she was 19 she moved to Vancouver where she met Corporal Ed Young, also from Melville. They were married in Melville in 1944. The RCAF posted Ed to the air base in Comox BC, where their first child Victor was born in 1945. Ed was later posted to Edmonton, where their second child Donna was born in 1952. After a posting in Ottawa, Ed resigned from the RCAF in 1958, and the family moved to McBride, BC to enter the hotel business, and then to Nelson.
In Nelson Evelyn was the Legion’s organizer for weddings and banquets. She also served on many committees of the Royal Purple, and was an avid curler and golfer. She and Ed divorced in 1968, and she remarried in 1971 to George Kellett. She remained in Nelson until George’s death in 1985, and then moved to Kelowna.
In Kelowna Evelyn was active with the IODE and the hospital gift shop. She was a super Gramma for Donna and Rod’s young family. She loved baking for her grandchildren and helping with their activities.
She is survived by her brother Paul, her children: Vic Young (wife Nancy) and Donna Robinson (husband Rod), 5 grandchildren: Jason Young, Allison Alpe (husband Andy), Tracy Guido (husband Joe), Sarah Barton (husband Craig) and Jeff Robinson (wife Whitney) and 3 great-grandchildren: Dalin Koons, Georgia Young and Avery Robinson.
Evelyn was a kind, generous and patient person with a great sense of humour. We miss her deeply.
A Mass to remember Evelyn will be held at Immaculate Conception Church on 839 Sutherland Avenue, Kelowna, BC at 1:00pm and internment at Lakeview Memorial Garden to follow.
Arrangements under the direction of First Memorial Funeral Services, Kelowna, BC.
