October 6th, 1997 - October 3rd, 2024 (age 26)
It is with complete shock and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph Whelan, who left us just days before his 27th birthday. On Thursday October 3rd, 2024, Joseph was riding his bike on a backwoods trail when he fell. Unfortunately, Joseph did not wear a helmet. He hit his head and sustained a concussion. Joseph went to his truck to rest and never woke up.
Joseph was born October 6th, 1997 in Bedford, Texas to Francis and Becky (Stoico) Whelan of Trophy Club, the first of their two children.
He was a graduate of Byron Nelson High School in the class of 2016. After high school, he took some classes at Tarrant County Community college, then found his love for the railroad. At his time at the railroad he loved working nights and his 12 hour long shifts as a brakeman, conductor, and an engineer. After the railroad he found his way out to West Texas, following his sister who attended Texas Tech University. He found his love for the oil fields and attained positions such as a wireline operator and a flowback hand operator.
Joseph was passionate about many things ranging from rodeo and country music to trucks and girls. Joseph grew up playing soccer, lacrosse, baseball, football, basketball, and golf. Joseph enjoyed cub scouts, boy scouts, and achieved his eagle scout. He rode horses through the Colorado Rockies, traversed the white-water rapids on the Colorado river, hunted and captured his first deer in West, Texas, shot snow geese in Houston, and fished for flounder in the Galveston Bay. Joseph ran cattle successfully siring calf’s and growing his heard. In Joseph’s free time he loved to drive around in his big, loud truck (as he had 4), blaring his country music and singing loudly for all to hear. After rodeoing on Friday night, he loved to hang out with his buddies and go to bonfires.
Joseph was free-spirited and determined to do whatever he set his mind to do. He was a wild child and lived life to the fullest, charging at it fearlessly in all endeavors. Joseph was a god-fearing man who talked to Jesus daily. He had an infectious smile that lit up the rooms he walked into and a personality that had never known a stranger. He was a phone call away for anyone in his life, who needed anything big or small, at all times.
Joseph is survived by his father, Francis Joseph Whelan, and his mother Becky Stoico Whelan; his sister Hallea Lane Whelan; his grandmothers Bettie Lee Stoico, and Joan Marie Ambrose; his grandfather, Bill William Roland Schoepf; his aunt, Joan Marie Whelan; his uncles Brian Mark Schoepf, Timothy Patrick Whelan, and Christopher Michael Whelan; and many cousins, seconds cousins, and other extended family.
Joseph is predeceased by his grandfathers, Louis Stoico Jr. and John Ambrose, and his cousin Sean Maner.
The visitation and funeral service will be held on Friday October 18th, 2024 at 12pm. It is open to the public and will be held at Keller Old Town Funeral Home and Crematory located at 220 Keller Pkwy, Keller, TX 76248.
You may send flowers to the funeral home through In Bloom florist, just give them call at 972-256-6637 and mention Joseph Whelan.
