She was born December 3, 1924, in Queens, NY, the daughter of Joseph and Lillian (Lockyer) Chmela, Sr. On June 28, 1947 she married the love of her life: William G. Nichols.
She was a devoted wife and loving mother and grandmother: known by many as “Nanny”. She enjoyed making special dishes for family, especially for her grandchildren: she was best known for her many recipes which included dumplings. Her home was always a warm and inviting place where everyone was welcome and where everything was always very clean. She had a gift for knitting and crocheting, making special things for many members of her family.
She is survived by her husband: William G. Nichols of Keene, her daughter: Joan DeVault and her husband Larry of Crozet, VA, three grandchildren: Jennifer DeCoste and her fiancé Greg Alexander, Emma Kobeski and her husband Adam and William DeVault, three great-grandchildren: Owen, Carter and Julia, her brother Billy Chmela of New York and several nieces, nephews and extended family members. She is predeceased by her bother Joseph and her sister: Mildred.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 22, 2016, at the Sts. Phillip and James Catholic Church, 454 N. County Road, St. James, NY, at 11:15am. Burial will follow in the Calverton National Cemetery, Calverton, NY at 1:30pm Family and friends are invited to call on the family Wednesday, July 20, 2016, from 4 to 6pm at the Foley Funeral Home, 49 Court Street, Keene, NH.
