John Vincent Schmitt

John Schmitt, a beloved husband, father, uncle, great uncle, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on the evening of July 9, 2023. Born on January 21, 1945, in Sacramento, California, he was the son of Leo Schmitt and Eileen Sheridan. John's legacy extends through his devoted wife of 53 years, Yvette Schmitt, and their two children, Fabrice Schmitt and Pascale Schmitt.

John's journey of love began when he married his soulmate, Yvette, in the picturesque town of La Rochefoucauld, France. Their union was a testament to the power of love, endurance, and unwavering commitment.

As a child, John moved to Denver, Colorado, where he embraced his love for skiing. He and his brother, William, spent much of their childhood skiing the slopes of Colorado and discovered a shared passion for golf while working as caddies. He also enjoyed his youth with his sisters Eileen and Coleen. Whether they were skiing, racing go carts, or sharing holidays, they experienced the challenges and joys of life together. John graduated from South Denver high school in 1962, where he laid the foundation for his future achievements.

Following his graduation from St. Martins University in Washington with a Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering in 1969, John embarked on an illustrious career that earned him recognition and respect. He served as President of The American Society of Civil Engineers and was honored as a Fellow for his outstanding contributions to the field. John's dedication to his profession was exemplary.

John was not only committed to his work but also to his community. He had been a volunteer with the Knights of Columbus, where he found joy in serving others and making a positive impact on those around him.

John's professional career began in bridge design, eventually transitioning into the oil and gas industry. He embarked on a remarkable journey while working for Aramco, living in Saudi Arabia for a time, where their eldest son, Fabrice, was born. Returning to Houston, their family grew with the birth of their second child, Pascale.

A man of vision and leadership, John made significant contributions as a program manager. He had the privilege of managing the construction project of the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Later he dedicated his skills to the education sector, taking on program management roles within schools. This led John and his family to relocate to Mansfield, Texas, where he worked closely with the local school district.

Upon retirement, John and his family returned to Houston, Texas, to join their daughter, where he enjoyed spending quality time with loved ones. A loving and caring individual, he cherished his extended family. He is survived by siblings William Schmitt, Coleen Whitlow, Michael Schmitt, his brother in-law Dr. Jesse Sutherland Sr., and sister in-law, Ruth Gribbin-Schmitt. John cherished his many nephews and nieces, including John Whitlow, Coleen Shepard, Jesse Sutherland, Nicholas Sutherland, Molly Henry, Shannon Schmitt Ostendorf, Leo Schmitt, and Olivia Schmitt. His many great nieces and nephews, and great, great niece will dearly miss him. John also greatly loved his many friends and his family in France.

In his final years, John was surrounded by the dedicated care of his caregiver, Michael Evens, and others who ensured his happiness and comfort.

John Schmitt was preceded in death by his parents, Leo Schmitt, Eileen Sheridan, his father and mother in-law, Martial Darnat, Denise Darnat, and his sister, Eileen Sutherland. He leaves behind cherished memories and a profound impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him. John's legacy of love, dedication, and passion will continue to inspire those whose lives he touched.

Visitation will be Wednesday, July 26, 2023, during the hours of 5:00-8:00PM, in the Rio Grande Chapel of Katy Funeral Home. The Recitation of the Rosary will begin at 7:00PM. The Funeral Mass will be Thursday, July 27, 2023, 10:30AM, at St. John Vianney Catholic Church, 625 Nottingham Oaks Trail, Houston, Texas 77079. Interment will follow at Memorial Oaks Cemetery, 13001 Katy Freeway, Houston, Texas 77079.
