Winifred Edson Palmer (Winnie) passed away on Friday, August 31st, 2018 at the age of 92. Winnie was born in Benton, KS to Amos and Fern Edson on February 7, 1926. She worked at Kansas Milling Company where she met the love of her life, Ross Palmer. They married on March 14, 1953. Ross and Winnie made their home in Wichita, KS, and they raised two sons, Bruce Edson and D.R. When the boys were still in school, Winnie earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Education. She taught 5th and 6th grade at Oaklawn Elementary for many years and retired from teaching in 1991.
After retirement, Winnie moved to Longmont, CO, to be closer to family. Winnie was a member of Westview Presbyterian Church in Longmont, where she participated in Deborah-Ruth women’s circle, taught Sunday school, and volunteered for the Round Pantry food distribution program. She loved to garden, sew, and decorate cakes for many celebrations. She also loved to bake; the family was especially fond of her pies and butterhorn rolls. She was preceded in death by her husband, Ross, her parents, her brother Lloyd Edson, sister-in-law Berneice Edson, and her brother-in-law Gene Jennings. She is survived by her sisters Rosalie Jennings and Darlene Bealmear (Chuck); her sons Bruce (Janie) and D.R. (Katie); grandchildren Brad (Danielle), Jared (Allison), Emily (Pat), Lacy (Austin), Tegan, Abby, Adam, and Lucy; many great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Winnie’s life will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, September 7, 2018 at McGilley Memorial Chapel - Midtown, 20 W. Linwood Blvd, Kansas City, MO, with visitation beforehand starting at 5:00 p.m. Burial will be Saturday, September 8th at White Chapel Memorial Gardens, Wichita, KS.
