Susan was born on October 10, 1945, in Berwyn, IL to August Frank Svec and Vera Agnes (Winfrey) Svec. She attended St. Mary of Celle Grammar School (Berwyn, IL), Nazareth Academy (LaGrange, IL), received her Bachelor of Science in Psychology in 1968 from the University of Illinois – Champaign-Urbana, IL campus and her Master of Social Work in 1988 from the Jane Addams School of Social Work, University of Illinois in Chicago, IL.
Susan worked at Concordia School for Children and the Lone Tree Girl School Council in the Chicago area; Joshua Tree Girl Scout Council in Bakersfield, CA; ReDiscover in Lee’s Summit MO, NorthCare Hospice and Palliative Care, North Kansas City, MO; and Metropolitan Lutheran Ministries in Kansas City, MO. Upon her retirement, Sue worked part-time at Price Chopper in Prairie Village, KS and Target in Kansas City, MO.
Susan loved working in her flower garden, selecting the flowers, planting, tending, weeding and seeing the beauty of God’s gift of nature. She volunteered at numerous nonprofit events throughout her life, once walking the 60 mile Susan B. Komen walk and the next year greeting walkers at the end of their days dressed as a cow with big pink utters; she loved going to the movies and then out to dinner. She was a devoted member of St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church where she served on the Pastoral Council, participated in the Mardi Gras and Christmas Basket programs, assisted the Bereavement Committee and supported the Emergency Assistance and Senior Center programs. Her smile and love will be missed by all.
Susan was preceded in death by her parents, her uncle Walter (Emily) Svec and cousins Charles and John Hartnett. She is survived by her sister, Carol Johnson, and cousins Walter (Diane) Svec (Joplin, MO), Margaret Giesler (Paris, IL) and Mary Ellen (Jim) Quirk (Exton, PA), numerous cousins and friends.
A Memorial Visitation will take place from 10:00am to 11:00am on Saturday, October 16 at St. Therese Little Flower Catholic Church, 5814 Euclid Avenue, Kansas City, MO. This will be followed by a Mass at 11:00am at the church.
