She was the 2nd daughter of Jacob Arn and Ruby (Jones) Arn. She grew up with her sister Betty (Arn) McNeill on her family’s farm near 103rd and Holmes Road in Jackson County, MO.
She attended Rural Heartman Elementary School and graduated from Ruskin High School in 1942. She played basketball and was active on the student counsel.
Shortly after entering Ruskin her life changed forever. She met the love of her life, Elmer Sanders. They dated through their 4 years of high school and married on November 6th, 1943. Elmer left for service in WWII right after they were married. While he was in combat, Sue gave birth to the first of 4 children.
When Elmer returned home they settled on the 120 acre Sanders Family Compound located at 107th and James A Reed Road. Elmer went to work building the family plumbing business into a premier, national mechanical contracting company. She focused all of her talent and energy on being a homemaker for her husband and 4 children. She was a spotless housekeeper, a great cook and caring mother
As her kids grew she always made a point to open her home to her kids’ and their friends and their cousins who live on the property at 107th. She supported her family in all their activities, little league, showing horses, rock bands, scouts, and cheerleading to name a few. She rarely missed a game or horse show.
After their last child graduated from high school, Sue and Elmer wanted to move away from the encroaching city and live on some acreage where they could continue their passion of raising livestock and horses. They bought 160 acres north of Louisburg, Kansas. They designed and built their dream home on the property.
Elmer passed away in 1985 but Sue continued to live on the Ranch until 2007. She and her 2nd son, Steve, raised show horses and champion beef cattle. Well into her 80’s she enjoyed bowling and all kinds of table games, especially card games.
As her mobility and energy decreased she moved to Santa Marta Retirement Community in Olathe, Kansas. She made friends with the great caregivers of Santa Marta, all who had a special affection for Sue.
She leaves 3 sons and their wives, Tom and Kathy Sanders, Steve and Margaret Sanders, and Don and Valerie Sanders. She also leaves behind 1 daughter, who was her best friend, Linda and her husband Mike Hayes. There are 11 grandchildren and 21 great- grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Contributions in her honor may be sent to Children’s Mercy Hospital Cancer Center.
Thank you for celebrating Sue Sanders life with us.
