Richard Michael Zuniga, Jr.

Richard Michael Zuniga, Jr., 52, passed away at KU Medical Center on November 23rd, 2024 surrounded by loved ones. Born in Kansas City, Missouri to Rachel Medina and Richard Michael Zuniga, Sr., he grew up in the Westport neighborhood and remained a devoted resident of the area throughout his life. Choo Choo was a beloved son, father, brother, and friend who never met a stranger.

He is survived by his children, Julian Zuniga, Gia Zuniga and Luke Zuniga; mother and stepfather, Rachel and Manuel Medina; and his sisters, Renee Valdovino and Elizabeth Marentes. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Alfred and Ramona Zuniga, Alvina Aguilera and Bernabe Aguilera; and his father, Richard Michael Zuniga, Sr. There is solace in the fact that he is reunited with many loved ones including Eddie Trejo, Olivia Raya and Anthony Rios, Valencia Alvarez and Dusty Courtney.

His love for his family and friends was evident in every aspect of his life, especially in the joyful moments spent with his children. He was an avid sports lover and devoted Kansas City Chiefs, Royals and KU fan. Big Rich had a great ear for music and loved quoting movies and attending concerts. He enjoyed laughing and exchanging jokes with his coworkers at the Ford Motor Company, where he was a proud UAW member for 26 years. He was an early morning riser, and if you were lucky enough to be on his call list you will surely miss the sound of his voice on the other line, a warmth that can never be replaced.

Visitation will be held on Monday, December 2nd, 2024 at 10:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Church, 1310 Westport Rd. Kansas City, MO, with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 a.m. Following Mass, Richard’s final resting place will be in Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Kansas City, KS.

Time feels cut too short, there were so many more good times & memories to be had with Richard, but we find comfort in knowing he will watch over us and remain with us in spirit for years to come. Rest in peace, Richard/ Choo Choo/ Dad. You will be forever missed and never forgotten.
