Rest in piece Uncle Richard. The world is better because of the silent mark you made.  One of the most intelligent and kind people you could know, gave lectures to doctors and advised our nations military when they called.  Always made you feel like you were the most important person in the room when you talked with him.  I will miss our conversations on guns and politics. Enjoy those hikes through heavens indescribable beauty,   give my little buddy Daniela a big hug for me and take her along for a hike for me. See you soon.

Dear Charlotte and family,
It has been many years since I shared time with Rich at MRI. I valued his friendship and looked forward to our interactions every day.
One might have questioned our work ethic as we spent a lot of time around the chess board and the ping pong table but we always got the job done.
Please accept my heartfelt condolences and well wishes from Terrie and Gene McGill.

Deepest condolences to the family.  I enjoyed working with Rich at MRIGlobal for many years.   Prayers and thoughts are with you.

Unfortunately, travel will keep me from attending Rich’s memorial service, so I am posting a little longer condolence. Rich had such a positive impact on my career at MRI. I am confident he also had a positive influence on many other staff careers at MRI. Rich had a long and storied career at MRI and he also had many stories to share. He had a way of making the best out of tough situations and always managed to keep a smile. Rich was one of the most influential colleagues I had the pleasure of working with and beside. He always made you feel that tackling any problem was a collaborative effort with him. The projects he was involved with typically had significant domestic and international consequences. Many of the project goals he could not even share with his family or friends, as they had government security implications. Rich made other individuals around him better as a person, leader and scientist.

After working with Rich for over 30 years, we also became good friends and I was blessed to get to know Charlotte and Jeff. Rich was so proud of Jeff and his accomplishments, but more importantly Rich’s smile broadened even more whenever he talked about Jeff and Anne and the grandkids. He loved sharing photos of the family hiking in the mountains on their trips to Colorado. Rich was also one of my best book critics. I became more interested in a variety of history books based on Rich’s recommendations. His avid interest in reading about history was infectious when he shared recollections of critical historical accounts from his books. I will miss our conversations that covered so many topics ranging from science to politics. We all know that he loved discussing politics. Rich had a passion for life that was evident in how he tackled and solved scientific challenges and how he approached personal relationships that left you feeling special. His humility was so admirable. Rich’s smile and infectious positive personality will be missed by many.

Rich and I were MRI colleagues from 1960's to 2020's.

When one loves what they do it's  not work and Rich's smiles in the halls of Kimball and Spencer buildings were proof of that.

It was hard to hear of his passing and I will miss that smile.
