Marty was born on July 3rd, 1957 in Vermillion, SD to parents J. Howard O’Connor and Lucille Kribell O’Connor. Growing up on a farm in rural South Dakota, he learned how to work at an early age and continued this discipline throughout his life. He was a graduate of the University of South Dakota where he met his future wife, Jill McCoy of Sioux City, IA. Marty and Jill were married on June 16th, 1979 and they raised two sons, Shane and Devin. Marty was best known for his fun-loving demeanor and his devotion to his family. If you were around Marty, good times and laughter were never in short supply, as well as the occasional prank! An avid golfer, he enjoyed spending his downtime on the links playing with friends or his sons. He was a loyal Chiefs and Royals fan through good times and bad, suffering and rejoicing with them for 30 years, as many long-time Kansas City residents can understand! Marty devoted himself wholeheartedly to everything he did, whether it was his family, work, or coaching his sons’ youth sports teams. He was proud of his farming roots and his Irish heritage.
Marty is survived by his beloved wife, Jill; sons Shane (Elisa) and Devin (Madeline); grandson Jack; siblings Rosemarie O’Connor (Michael Allsop), Dan O’Connor (Dorothy), Susanne Foster (Steve), Tim O’Connor (Mary Montana), Donna Heidi (Dennis, deceased), Kelly O’Connor (Kris), Kevin O’Connor (Michelle), Shannon O’Connor (Norma), Jane O’Connor (Angelo DeSanto), and twin sister Mary Merrigan (Tom). He will be greatly missed by his family and many friends.
