Lucia “Lucy” Ramirez Velasquez, 95 years & 9 months old, died peacefully at home on September 19, 2023. Lucy was born on December 14, 1927, in Somerville, Texas to Guadalupe (Mercado) and Procopio Ramirez. Lucy married Adolph Velasquez on July 17,1942. Over 81 years, the couple welcomed 5 children, 9 grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great granddaughter.
Her children remember her as a loving, kind and generous mother. She was supportive of many of their life goals and always gave them encouragement. She spent many years raising her five children. She worked very hard, saved her money, and was able to buy her own vehicle…a 1968 Mustang. Lucy enjoyed sewing, quilting, and crocheting. She was a member of the Northland Quilters Guild, where she won a Red Ribbon at one of the quilt shows. Lucy’s garden always bloomed with roses, azaleas, iris, hydrangeas, Hosta, and a host of other plant varieties. Lucy was an amazing cook, with potato salad, burritos, and enchiladas as family favorites, shared at many family gatherings. All of her grandchildren, at one point, were taught to make tortillas. Most of the time their hands were busy in the finished basket. Spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren was always a good past time. She loved attending their sporting and dance events. In addition, Lucy enjoyed traveling to many different state’s quilt shows and shops. She especially loved visiting relatives.
Her celebrations were always family oriented. She had a great sense of humor with a laughter that was very contagious.
She was a member of St. Gabriel the Archangel Catholic Church.
Lucy is preceded in death by her daughter “Dottie” (Mary); parents Lupe & Procopio Ramirez; brothers Abraham, Nemecio, Tiburcio; sisters Elizabeth Alcanter, Brigette Ramirez, Barbara Garcia, Virginia Valdepeña.
