Lovie Beatrice Mason

Affectionately known as “Lovie B” to close friends and family, Lovie was a woman of prayer and deep devotion. She walked closely with the Lord and could usually be found reading her Bible, writing study notes in her journal, or watching one of her favorite preachers. She was a mentor and mother to many spiritual sons and daughters and had a special place in her heart for her many nieces and nephews.

Lovie was born in Belzoni, Mississippi in 1937 to Alonzo and Amy (Snyder) Mason. She was preceded in death by her parents and 13 siblings. As one of 15 children, she grew up as part of a large loving family in Swiftown, Mississippi. She often talked about the hard work of sharecropping and picking cotton while growing up but there was also plenty of love, joy, and laughter. As a teenager, Lovie was sent to live with her brother Frank in Wichita, KS to attend and graduate from high school.

Lovie gave her life to Jesus as a young child and was called to preach at the age of 14. As a young adult, she briefly attended Miracle Valley Bible College under the legendary evangelist A. A. Allen.

Lovie served in many churches over the years in whatever capacity was needed most. She also evangelized and preached in several ministries.

In 1968, Lovie gave birth to her only child, Jennifer Joy (Mason) Shackleford. She was a devoted and loving mother, and they were very close. Jennifer often remembers hearing her mother praying over her in the middle of the night. She will be forever grateful for the spiritual legacy she was given.

Lovie worked at the US Post Office for 23 years before retiring early to start the Word Church. She ministered weekly to the homeless, feeding them spiritually and physically. She fed as many as 150 men and women a weekly breakfast before teaching them the Word of God.

Lovie wore many hats, but her favorite role was grandmother to Noah Shackleford, her pride and joy, and favorite partner in crime.

Lovie will always be remembered for her wonderful smile, infectious laughter, and her deep devotion to the Lord. She encouraged her spiritual sons and daughters with these words: “Always follow the Lord and you will never go wrong.”

Lovie will be deeply missed by her sister Jane Williams (Wichita, KS), daughter Jennifer J. Shackleford (Lance), grandson Noah Shackleford, and a whole host of loving nieces, nephews, and friends.

Lovie will be laid to rest in a private family ceremony at Mt Moriah Cemetery South.

A public Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, March 9, 2024, from 11 AM – 1 PM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
