Liz Winter

Liz, as she was affectionately called by all, was born on June 23, 1935 in Hunnewell, MO to Guy and Ethel Sherwood (Mason). She was the youngest of ten siblings and had five sisters and four brothers. She tended to a farm, and spent her early years feeding the pigs and collecting fruit from the various trees on their land. She recounted many stories about her brothers and sisters over the years.

On April 28, 1956 in Mexico, MO, she married the love of her life, Donald Van Winter, and they’d go on to spend 65 years together, until Donald’s death in 2021. They raised a daughter, Pam, and a son, Shane.

They moved to Raytown, MO in 1970, and lived there for 50 years.

Liz was the ultimate mother and grandmother. She lived for her family, always willing to drop anything in her own life if it meant improving the life of someone she loved. She was sharp, quick-witted, funny, and her smile lit up any room she was in.

She was a conversationalist, always asking questions to learn more about whomever she was speaking with. Liz seldom talked about herself but would spend hours asking questions and engaging in conversation with those she loved. The highlight of her day was answering the telephone and having one of her children, her grandchildren, a brother, a sister, a niece or nephew on the other end of the phone.

While her family was everything to her here on earth, she lived for Jesus and loved reading and studying the Bible, singing hymns, and prayed faithfully for those she loved, a true prayer warrior. She taught Sunday School for many years at First Baptist Church of Raytown, impacting countless children during that time. She loved the Royals, and never missed a game. Most summer nights were spent beside Don, watching every pitch of that night’s game. But if you asked her who her favorite ballplayers were, the answer was easy.

Her grandsons were everything to her, and she never missed a second of either of their lives.

Liz was a successful court recorder in Mexico, MO, and was very proud of her work. She gave that up to devote her life to raising a family, and in the process became the best Matriarch that any family could imagine. She was her daughter’s best friend, and her daughter was her best friend.

Liz was preceded in death by her husband, Donald, her son, Shane, her son-in-law, Roger Dumas, her father Guy Sherwood, her mother Ethel “Maggie” Sherwood, her sisters, Mae McGlothein, Elzada Hesselmeyer, Pearl King, Marge Mayes and Daphne Sharpe and her brothers, Harold Sherwood, Steve Sherwood and Bill Sherwood. She is survived by her daughter, Pam Judd (Dumas), her son-in-law David Judd, her grandsons, Chad and Kyle Dumas, her granddaughters-in law, Stacy Dumas and Stephanie Dumas, her great-grandchildren Monty, Scarlett and Beau Dumas, her brother, Dean and many wonderful cousins, nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 10 at Newcomer’s Floral Hills Funeral Home at 7000 Blue Ridge Boulevard at 1 o’clock p.m. with services to immediately follow at 2 o’clock p.m. Burial will be at Floral Hills East Memorial Gardens in Lee’s Summit at around 3 o’clock p.m., following the services.
