Leon Parker Ogilvie, 83, of Kansas City, Missouri, passed away on July 29, 2015. Leon was born in Kansas City on October 28, 1931, to Hoyt and Tilly Ogilvie. Leon is survived by his wife of 46 years Hilda, daughter Kim, son Hoyt and his wife Amy, and three grandchildren: Irena, Ada, and Parker all of Kansas City.
Leon received his undergraduate degree from Central Missouri State University, his masters from Louisiana State University, and his Ph.D. in history from the University of Missouri. Leon was a lifelong educator having spent over 30 years teaching history in the Metropolitan Community College System. He was the division chair of the Social Science Department at both Penn Valley and Maple Woods. He made the tough decision to retire in 2000 and spent time doing the things he loved most with people who mattered most to him.
Leon was an avid tennis player until Lewy Body Dementia took away his ability to play. However, he continued to watch tennis whenever he could. Leon was a past president of the Rockhill Tennis Club. Leon enjoyed having lunch with his many tennis friends and enjoyed the many political turns each luncheon would take. Leon also loved the Missouri Tigers, baseball, reading, history, and politics. And above all else, Leon loved his family.
Leon believed in the civil liberties of all regardless of race, religion, or gender. He believed everyone should be given a fair chance to reach their full potential. He instilled these beliefs in his children and his children continue to follow this core belief.
A Memorial Visitation will be held at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home (10507 Holmes Road) on August 5, 2015, from 5:30 to 7:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to the Lewy Body Dementia Association, 912 Killian Road S.W., Lilburn, Georgia 30047.
