Born on November 8, 1943 to Orville R. and Geneva DeShazer, Lavona was known for her warmth, wit, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James “Jimmy” Bowin, as well as her brothers Orville D., Jack, and David DeShazer, and her son-in-law, Jay Vannice.
Lavona is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Vannice (Denny); her grandchildren, Janelle (Dan) Cook and Derek Vannice; her cherished great-granddaughters, Annabelle and Josephine Cook; as well as her brother Donnie DeShazer and her sister Yuvona Breece. Her family brought her endless joy, and she never missed an opportunity to spoil her great-grandkids or travel cross-country to give them a visit from their “Meme.”
Lavona spent many years working at JCPenney in the fine jewelry department, where her eye for beauty and knack for conversation made her a favorite among coworkers and customers alike.
She was a passionate fan of tennis, figure skating, and the Kansas City Chiefs and Royals. Whether she was working on a puzzle, catching up with friends over lunch or happy hour, or cheering on (i.e. yelling at the TV) her teams, Lavona lived life with energy and heart.
A visitation will be held at 1:00 PM on Tuesday, April 29, followed by a memorial service at 1:30 PM and catering, at Floral Hills Funeral Home, 7000 Blue Ridge Blvd, Kansas City, MO.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Novus LifeCare Home Health & Hospice, 373 W 101st Terrace Suite 230, Kansas City, MO 64114.
Lavona will be deeply missed and fondly remembered for her generous spirit, a quick, witty sense of humor, and the love she gave so freely to those around her.
