Throughout Toby's life, he was devoted to helping people by serving his country and local community. After returning from his service in the United States Army Air Corps, Toby became a firefighter in 1948 and began serving the citizens of his community, first in Prairie Village (Consolidated Fire District 2 & 3) and then Leawood, KS. He became the first paid Fire Chief for the City of Leawood in 1966 and dutifully served in that capacity with the highest commitment to safeguarding the citizens of Leawood and their property until he retired in 1984. During his tenure, he was instrumental in adding state of the art firefighting equipment, increasing the use of volunteers, including the female volunteers in the early 1970's (affectionately known as the "Rescuettes") and building Leawood's second fire station. In addition to his commitment to the City of Leawood, Toby was a founding member of Johnson County, Kansas Med-Act and a good friend and advocate for field paramedics as a Board Member for many years. His dedication for serving the City of Leawood and Johnson County, Kansas created a long lasting foundation of excellence in firefighting and emergency medical service that continues today.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Virginia L. “Ginny” Toman. He is survived by his son, Jourdan A. Toman, Jr. and daughter, Deborah A. Stout; his grandchildren Jourdan A. Toman, III, Timothy W. Toman, and Kenna V. Stout; and great grandchildren Camille L. Toman, Gentry L. Toman, Parker B. Toman, and Reagan E. Toman.
Jourdan A. Toman was a true hero who will be missed by his community, friends and family.
