John R. "Rick" Young Jr.

He was a resident of Overland Park, Kansas and was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri. He was a lifelong resident of the area.

Rick worked with his family business Cy Young Industries, Inc. his entire life. Rick didn’t know how not to work hard.

Rick’s favorite hobby was woodworking and enjoyed his workshop and taking classes. He loved to travel and see new places. He enjoyed bowling.

Rick was strong in his faith and enjoyed serving Mass as an adult through the iCare Ministries, Inc. (Inclusive Catholic Activities and Religious Experience). He has been a member of Knights of Columbus his entire adult life, ending with Council #10932 at Church of the Ascension in Overland Park, Kansas.

Rick was preceded in death by his mother, Carrie Ellen Young, brother-in-law, Thomas E. Oxley and parents-in-law, Erna and Eisig Wolowski. He leaves behind his wife, Giselle, of the home, father John R. Young Sr., sisters Jody (Young) Akins, Catherine (Young) Oxley, Diane (Young) Koeser (Mark) and Nancy Young (William Flatt). Niece, Melissa (Akins) DePratt (Tony), and nephews Stephen Akins (Katy Achtenberg) and Jack Oxley. Rick had many friends, co-workers and extended family that will dearly miss him.

Rick was enrolled at JCCC, for decades, in the CLEAR Program (College Learning Experience, Activities and Resources).

Friends are invited to celebrate Rick’s life with a visitation at 10:00 AM, a Funeral Mass at 11:00 AM at Queen of the Holy Rosary June 28, 2024 at 7023 W. 71st Street, Overland Park, Kansas 66204. Inurnment to follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery, 7601 Blue Ridge Blvd., Raytown, Missouri 64137. A Celebration of Life Luncheon and program to follow at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131.

Rick’s good humor and generous spirit touched everyone he met. Always ready for conversation, he never met a stranger and he never let life’s challenges hold him back.
