Rode Family, I am so sorry to hear about John. I really enjoyed getting to know your Dad and Grandpa over the past couple of years.  It was really nice sittting in his livingroom and chatting.  He was a truly kind man and a gentleman.

We are sorry to hear that John has passed.  We enjoyed his visits on our front porch.  Ellen Beechwood and Family.

Carolyn, just wanted to say I was sorry to hear of your Dad's passing. i'm sure he's having a wonderful reunion with your mom in heaven! No matter how old we are or how long they lived their lives, we're never ready to lose our parents. Enjoy your memories. Peace, my friend.

Please accept my sincere condolences on the passing of your beloved father.  May he rest in peace along side your mother.

It hit me like a ton of bricks the other night when I stepped out on my back porch... I will no longer be able to hear my dear neighbor of 18 years playing his flute or piccolo.  He would probably scoff at this, but hearing his music was always very comforting and soothing to my soul espcially on a beautiful Spring afternoon.  John ("Gene") and Connie were great neighbors, and we feel extremely priviledged to have had them in our lives.  Although it makes me very sad to have Gene gone, I can just hear Connie calling him now and it warms my heart to know they are together again.  Our hearts go out to Pam, Bri, Carolyn, Jim, Collin, and Kelley.  May our very dear friend rest in peace.

True story to share:
On the night of our last rehearsal before Christmas Midnight Mass, we had a little pizza party.   After pizza, the choir moved into the church.   The room quickly emptied.   I was about to leave, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw Gene sitting alone at a table by the Christmas tree.  I couldn't help notice his wine glass.  It was still half full.  Mine was just about empty.
I walked over to Gene and asked kiddingly, “Are you coming?  He smirked and replied, “Do you think they'll miss us?  I haven't finished my wine.  It's good.”  I sat down and couldn't help notice the smile that had suddenly appeared on his face.  I affirmed his assessment of the wine.  It was good.  We finished our drinks and moseyed into church.  Gene asked, “Do think there will be more wine afterwards?  I said, “Yes, there will always be more wine. “
After Christmas, we had our annual Christmas party.  I walked into the room and there was Gene.  There were only a handful of us there at the time.  I couldn't help notice.  Yep, he had a glass of wine in hand.  I said, “Hey, see, I told you there was more wine.”
We were standing near a coat rack that had a set of angel wings on a hanger.  They were left out from the Christmas day children's mass.  I figured they were there for a reason.  So, I took the golden wings and hung them on the back of Gene's coat collar.   I then said, “You know Gene?  There will always be an abundance of wine. But we're a little short on angels.  Here are your wings.”
 He took a few steps with the wings still hanging on his collar.  Gene said, “They're kind of burdensome.”  I replied, “Well, angles have a lot of responsibilities.”  I could see he was ready for liberty, so the wings found the rack once again.  We were back to our wine.  
I learned of Gene's passing on Monday and knew Wednesday's rehearsal would be a sad one.  I had gone to the 6:30 mass on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings and made my single intention for the masses to be for the repose of Gene's soul.   On Wednesday, after the prayers of the faithful, I looked quickly ahead to see what Sunday's gospel reading was going to be.  The Holy Spirit had given me a burning thought that it might have something to do with wine.  Sure enough, Sunday's gospel reading is from the gospel of St. John:  The wedding feast at Cana.  Jesus changes gallons of water into wine. 
 It was the best wine.  Gene is now tasting it and has found it to be very good.  I guess the Holy Spirit was trying to tell me something that I had prayed for. 
Jesus is the New Wine.  He pours Himself out at each Mass so that we might be renewed.  His blood washes away our sins and our guilt.  He refreshes our souls each time we drink from His cup.  
May Gene live eternally with Our Father and dine at the table that has been prepared for him.  Jesus, our Lord and Savior, hear our prayer. 

Rest in peace Brother!  We'll see you again soon!

I am grateful for the life of Mr. Rode.  Thanks to his service and to the service of others in our armed forces, my family and I have been able to lead our lives in freedom and peace.

I'm so sorry to hear of John's passing. He and Connie were very supportive as volunteers at Johnson County Community College's Carlsen Center. They were very kind to me when I came to work there, way back in 1990, and were always so helpful and upbeat. He will be missed!
