James (Jim) Lawrence Robinson of Leawood, Kansas passed away on July 10, 2021, surrounded by his family. Jim was born in Laona, WI, to the late Eva (Buran) Robinson and Carl L. Robinson. Jim is survived by his wife Barbara Robinson of 52 years, daughter Lori-Lin (Robinson) Shipman (Terry Shipman), son Lee J. Robinson, granddaughter Mia Shipman, brother John Robinson (the late Charlene Robinson), sister Lois (Robinson) Price (Dick Price) and many other extended family members. He was preceded in death by his parents, stepmother Frances (Anderson) Robinson, brother Keith Robinson (Lois Robinson), sister Janet Robinson and sister Joyce Robinson.
After graduating from Laona High School in 1953, Jim earned a B.Ed. from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, an M.A. from Iowa State University and then an M.B.A. from Inter-American University while teaching at Ramey Air Force Base in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico. In 1967, he transferred to teach at Itazuke High School on the Air Force Base in Fukuoka, Japan where he met Barbara. They married in December 1968 and eventually returned to live in Kansas City.
In Kansas City, Jim worked in both the private and public sectors. He taught in Kansas City Public Schools at Westport High School and then Lincoln College Prep where he ultimately retired. Jim enjoyed volunteering for ministries at the Church of the Resurrection such as Bless the School and Disaster Response. He even received chainsaw certification to join the Chainsaw Ministry team. He was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in 2011 and endured years of treatment with determination and dignity. Jim’s diagnosis did not affect his quality of life as he enjoyed taking family vacations and especially spending time with his granddaughter Mia.
Jim loved to travel, to learn and above all, he loved his family. He will be missed for his sense of humor, kindness and generosity.
We believe that Jim’s life post diagnosis would not have allowed him to do the many things that he did if it were not for The Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation. Donations to the foundation can be submitted on the MMRF Memorial Page for Jim: https://give.themmrf.org/JimRobinson
