Herman A. Scharhag, 87, died peacefully early Monday morning, January 9, 2012 at North Care Hospice House, North Kansas City, Missouri. Memorial visitation will be from 12:00-1:00 p.m. followed by Memorial service at 1:00 p.m. Monday, January 16, at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, with a Royal Order of Jesters Court 54 Rose Ceremony to follow. Herman was born June 20, 1924 in Cincinnati, Ohio to Ernst Joseph Herman Scharhag and Louise Skoff. After graduation from Withrow High School in Cincinnati, Herman was accepted into the Army Specialized Training Program and sent to the Missouri School of Mines in Rolla, Missouri. Prior to finishing the program, he was called into active duty and completed basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood. Before leaving for Europe as an artilleryman, he married Phyllis Ann Mackey. At the end of the European campaign, he returned on the Queen Mary and was on leave before going on to the invasion of Japan, but was spared by Truman dropping the bomb. After his discharge, Herman and Phyllis came to the Kansas City area and raised their children, Robbin, David and Scott. Herman intended to continue his education at the Kansas City Art Institute, but started working with the architectural firm of Kivett and Myers as a draftsman. In 1952, he passed the exam to become a registered architect, continuing his career until retiring from his own firm, Herman Scharhag Architects. His architectural designs can be seen throughout the area. After “retirement”, he continued his love of art and was involved with the art communities of the area until his death. Herman was a 50 year member of the Alpha Masonic Lodge in North Kansas City. He was also a member of the Ararat Shrine, its Million Dollar Patrol Unit and Ole Car Unit. He was a founding member of The Order of Quetzalcoatl at Ararat Shrine Temple and the Royal Order of Jesters, Court 54. Phyllis died in 1979 and Herman married Virginia Lee Webster in 1981. Virginia’s son David then joined the family. Herman was preceded in death by both Phyllis and Virginia, his parents, sister Frieda Urbahns, brother Robert Scharhag, half-brother Rudy Skoff, and infant sister, as well as his son David Scharhag. He is survived by a daughter, Robbin Musgrave (Tony) of Kansas City, his son Scott Scharhag (Barbara) of Champlain, New York, and stepson David Webster of San Fernando, California. He has four grandchildren, Brady Musgrave (Amy) of Springfield, Missouri, Chris Musgrave (Jennifer), Lauren Roberts (Patrick), and Matthew Scharhag of Kansas City, Missouri and four great-grandchildren. Herman was a very generous, loving man and his last gift was to the Anatomy and Cell Biology Department of KU Medical Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be directed to the Ararat Shrine Wings of Mercy, the Northland Art League, or North Care Hospice House. Condolences may be offered at www.mtmoriah-freeman.com. Arrangements under the direction of Mount Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, Kansas City, MO.
