Glenn Edwin Cherry

away on May 12, 2023, at the age of 89. Glenn was born on June 18, 1933, in Kent

County, Texas, to Albert (Bert) Hamilton Cherry and Ona (Fay) Cornelius Cherry.

Glenn proudly served his country as a Marine from 1951 to 1954. After serving in the

military and in the Korean War, he began his career as a police officer in Lubbock, TX, in

1954. While in Lubbock, he met the love of his life, Nellie Sisson Cherry. Together, they

moved to Kansas City in 1965, where he worked his way through the ranks of the

Kansas City Police Department, ultimately retiring as a police captain in the

K-9/helicopter unit in 1995. Glenn also worked for the Environmental Protection Agency

from 1997 to 2013.

Aside from his distinguished career, Glenn was known for his love of family. Glenn and

Nellie were married for 56 amazing years and had 6 children together. He is survived by

Carl David Cherry, George Edwin Cherry (Kathy), James William Cherry (Tamey), Kathy

Lynn Butts (Doug), and Elizabeth Faye Choate (Bud) and is preceded in death by Allen

Wayne Cherry (Paula). Glenn was a loving father and grandfather to his 21 grandchildren

and 30 great-grandchildren. His notepad containing every child's birthday was never far

from his side. He loved sharing with anyone how proud he was to have such a large

family.

He loved Wednesday morning breakfasts with police department retirees where they’d

share stories of their careers. For 40 years, on Friday nights, you could find Glenn at Los

Corrales enjoying dinner with his beloved family. Glenn was known for his love of gospel

and folk music, exceptional storytelling, and curious heart for genealogy. Late in life,

Glenn found companionship again with Dottie, who was by his side for nine years.

Glenn is also survived by his sister, Mattie (Ophelia) Cherry Swaringen, and preceded in

death by his brother, Robert Elton Cherry.

Glenn will be deeply missed by his family and friends, but his memory will live on

through the countless lives he touched. He will forever be remembered as a wonderful

person who made the world a better place with his kind and generous spirit. Rest in

peace, Captain Cherry.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 18th from 9am-11am, funeral service at 11am at McGilley & Sheil Chapel, 11924 E. 47th St. KC, MO 64133, committal to follow, 1pm at Higginsvile Vetereran's Cemetery, Higginsville, MO.
