Gladys “Ann” Holland McDaniel was born on October 16, 1937 in Columbus, Ohio to the union of Vernon Holland and Gladys Thompson, who both preceded her in death. Ann was the third of four siblings and grew up in a very close-knit family with many aunts, uncles and cousins all around.
Ann graduated from East High School in 1955 and went on to attend The Ohio State University. Ann married her high school sweetheart, John McDaniel, and to this union one daughter and three sons were born. The family moved to Kansas City, Missouri in 1966. She later moved to California and spent many years there, before making Kansas City, Missouri her permanent home in 1989.
During her time in Kansas City, Ann advanced from student model to Office Manager at Patricia Stevens Model Agency and Fashion Merchandising School located on the Country Club Plaza where she became a trusted friend to the owner Florence Stevens. During her years in California, Ann was one of the top-ranking sales associates in cosmetics and fine jewelry at I. Magnin Department Store in San Francisco, Union Square. She had a dazzling personality, a smile that warmed hearts, and she engaged everyone she met – even during brief encounters. Ann loved her time at I. Magnin where she frequently saw and met many movie and TV stars. In her last years there, she moved from sales and into the fragrance buying office, where she continued to meet and work with famous designers.
Ann lived a life of faith. Her Christian journey began at the Church of Christ in Columbus, Ohio. In the 1970’s Ann made her church home at a Unity Church, Lakeside Temple of Christianity in Oakland, CA. Upon returning to Kansas City, she attended classes and workshops at Unity Village and enjoyed services at both Unity on the Plaza and Unity Church of Overland Park (UCOP). Ann became a member at UCOP where she worked and volunteered her time. She was a member of the prayer team, worked in the front office, and supported youth activities.
Ann was also a devoted grandmother giving her love and prayers to all of her grandchildren. Over the years, she delighted in attending many sporting events, plays, and choir recitals. She was very proud of their accomplishments and was a constant cheerleader.
On Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at the age of 82, Ann put on her heavenly wings and went to join her mother in heaven.
Ann leaves to mourn her passing, one daughter and three sons: Amy McDaniel Dickinson, John A. McDaniel, Jeffery McDaniel, Jay McDaniel (Cassandra); six grandchildren: Tia McDaniel, Tonee McDonald, John McDaniel, Sadar McDaniel, Lauryn Harland, Kendal Harland; one sister, Carol Anderson; and a host of other extended family members and friends.
