George was born April 19, 1938, in Kansas City, KS, to Horace and Florence Sherman. He obtained his GED while in the Navy and served on the USS George Clymer (APA27). He then worked for the Santa Fe railroad for the next 36 years. During that time George met his wife of 60 years, Shirley. They had a long and loving relationship and bore three children, Gregory, Jennifer and Kimberly.
George was a member of the Kansas Freemasons, Wyandotte Lodge #3. He was a 32nd degree Scottish Rite Freemason and a member of the Abdallah Shrine. He was an avid sports fan. George loved the Royals, Chiefs and KU Jayhawks. In his spare time George enjoyed model railroading and spending time with his family and friends.
George was preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Florence Sherman and his six brothers and sisters. He is survived by his loving wife, Shirley Sherman; sister, Glenda Smith, Kansas City, KS; son, Gregory Sherman (Kay), Chattanooga, TN; daughter, Jennifer Pate (Robert), Shawnee KS; daughter, Kimberly Shukeat (Jason), Tonganoxie, KS; grandchildren, Makenzie Bethune (Carson), Kaleb Shukeat, Ashley Hays, Khianna Shukeat; great-grandchildren, Harper and Brooks Bethune; step-grandson, Shawn Shukeat; and step-great-grandson, Maverick Shukeat.
In lieu of flowers. the family requests gifts to the Advent Health Kansas City Foundation to benefit the B.E. Smith Family Center, www.adventhealthkcfoundation.org. George was very passionate with supporting his community, First Responders, Shawnee Kansas Police Department, Salvation Army, American Red Cross, and Shriner’s Hospital.
A visitation for George will be held Friday, November 22, 2024 from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri 64131. A celebration of life will follow at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow the service at 12:00 PM. Burial will take place at 2:30 PM Shawnee Mission Memory Gardens, 23215 West 75th Street, Shawnee, KS 66227.
