Evelyn Dorothy Gelb, 83, beloved wife of Larry Gelb, died peacefully at Clare Bridge Alzheimer’s and Dementia Unit on July 4, 2014. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2014 at Mt. Moriah & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri. Burial in Mt. Moriah Cemetery South. Evelyn was a lively, vibrant, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, gardener and humanitarian. She was born March 23, 1931, daughter of Helen Elizabeth Hickock and Beam Marshall Crockett. Evelyn attended Paseo High School, Kansas City Missouri Junior College and Central Missouri State University. She was a member of Sigma Kappa Sorority and Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. Evelyn was a Daughter of the American Revolution.
Evelyn was a Jewish Family Services Spiritual Care Volunteer at Menorah Medical Center, and was recently recognized in June for five years of dedicated volunteer service. She was also a volunteer at the hospital information desk with husband, Larry. Evelyn was a chair of the Cares Committee of Congregation Kol Ami. Evelyn participated in the Leawood, Kansas, Police Department’s Ride-Along Program. Evelyn was an active member of Temple Sinai.
Evelyn is survived by her husband, Larry Gelb of Kansas City, Missouri; her elder sister, Shirley Pickett (Fred) of McLean, Virginia.; seven children: Deborah Elizabeth (Gregory) Kilgore of Wichita, Kansas, Nancy Ann Rezabek of St. Petersburg, Florida, David Michael Peters of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Robin Bateman (Jim) of Lafayette, California, Janis Robbins of Boston, Massachusetts, Marcia Bernstein (Larry) of Avon, Colorado, and Barb Novorr (Jeff) of Burke, Virginia; eight grandchildren: Lindsay (Sam) Pickell of Arlington, Virginia, Laura Waples of Wichita, Kansas, Celia Bateman of Lafayette, California, Matthew and Curtis Robbins of Boston, Massachusetts, David (Shawnee) Bernstein of Johnstown, Pennsylvania, and Ben and Jon Novorr of Burke, Virginia. Evelyn is also survived by her four legged friend, Buddy the cat.
