On Thursday, February 15th, a kind, loving soul departed this earth and arrived at heaven's gates. Curtis Alan Pickering was an extremely kind, multifaceted man, known for his awesome one-liner jokes, his wit, his intelligence, his musically inclined mind, his entrepreneurial spirit, his capitalist lure, and his self-made success.
Although Curtis faced adversity throughout his life, and as a child he was diagnosed with multiple exostoses which required many surgeries, he never let anything stand in his way. Curtis was courageous and fought until the very end of his years long battle with Parkinson’s disease, still telling jokes until his very last day. He was a dreamer, always setting his sights high, and now that he’s grown his wings, he can finally fly. We’ll miss him deeply as we somehow try to go on with pieces of our hearts missing, as his witty personality captured so many of the living.
Curtis Alan Pickering was born in Kansas City, MO on April 25, 1951 to Marjorie and Harold Pickering. He was the youngest of four siblings including; Debra Pickering-Hussey (deceased), Douglas Pickering (deceased), and Dennis Pickering (Patti Pickering). Curtis leaves behind his wife of 35 years, Stacy Pickering, and his 2 daughters Sophie Pickering and Hannah Pickering along with numerous other family members.
Growing up, Curtis was always set apart from the rest. He was a vibrant & highly creative individual, often resorting to music & the drums to tame his wild soul. He and his brothers were Eagle Scouts in the tribe of Mic-O-Say, he later served on the executive board for Boy Scouts of America. He attended both Southeast high school and Center High school, where his entrepreneurial spirit blossomed. Today, his iconic drum set now sits empty, as equally empty are our hearts.
He was a gifted entrepreneur, a creative genius most would say, & founder of numerous companies including; VPR Creative Group, VPR Patient Outreach Program, Production Source, and Snowball Records to name a few. In 1979, Curtis wrote, produced, and directed an entire musical, a rock opera, The Singer Storical. He was a talented musician, drummer, manager, producer, lyricist, and songwriter who, despite his own battles, never lost his touch. During his time as the owner and head of VPR Creative group and VPR POP, he was a hardworking producer & an incredible writer, and those who knew Curtis knew that he never missed a single lunch. Many looked up to him not
only as a father and a leader, but as a gifted mentor, after all, he always gave the best advice. Those who knew Curtis also knew he was stubborn but tough.
Most of all, Curtis valued kindness and love, and knew the best way to start each day was always with a smile and positivity. He did not have an angry bone in his body, and if any of us were ever conflicted, he would simply say - we love everybody.
His beat must go on, and so must we. He will be deeply missed by all the lives he touched; his daughters, his wife, his many friends, coworkers and fellow musicians. Most of all, he was a gifted father and husband who can never be replaced. He never let a single challenge stand in his way or stop him from achieving his dreams, and tonight as we dream away, he’ll be up in the clouds as another angel guiding our way.
