

Carolyn was born on January 14, 1952, to Garland and Marie Burchfield in St. Louis, Missouri. She grew up in High Hill, Missouri on her family's farm. She attended Montgomery County High School graduating in 1970. She went to college at the University of Missouri Rolla, and received her Bachelor's of Science and Electrical Engineering in May of 1974. She earned her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Missouri of Kansas City in May, 1979.
She originally moved down to Houston, Texas after graduation to work for Exxon Mobil, however, she moved back to Kansas City to marry the love of her life, Robert Adkins, in 1974. She began her career at Black & Veatch as an Electrical Engineer, and worked there for the next 15 years. After Black & Veatch she worked for the FAA, Kiewit, and most recently with the City of Kansas City Missouri Public Works Street Lighting as an electrical engineer, before retiring in 2019 after 15 years of service.
She was actively involved in the Second Presbyterian Church choir, from 1979-2008. Most recently Carolyn was an active member of the St. Mary's Episcopal Church choir, since 2008. She was also a member of the American Harp Society, North American Welsh Choir, the North America Welsh Harp Society, and the Welsh Triple Harp Society in Wales, from 2000-2024.
She had a passion for sewing passed down by her mother. She was an avid seamstress, making her own dresses and quilts. She learned the Welsh language and was a long-time member of St. David's Welsh Society of Kansas City. She loved her cats and they loved her spending time with her during her final days. She loved to attend the Kansas City Symphony, Kansas City Ballet, and Kansas City Opera, being a season ticket holder for over 30 years.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Garland Burchfield and Marie Burchfield.
She is survived by her husband of 50 years Robert Adkins; her pedigree cats; and many aunts, cousins, and nieces, and many friends.
The family would like to thank St. Luke's Home Care Hospice for the excellent care they showed Carolyn through her final days.
Services for Carolyn will be held on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at St. Mary's Episcopal Church, 1307 Holmes Street, Kansas City, MO 64106. A visitation will be held from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, with the funeral service following at 11:00 AM. A reception will follow at the conclusion of the funeral service.
A committal service will occur Monday, March 31, 2025 from 2:00 PM to 2:30 PM at Mount Moriah Cemetery, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131.
