Mr. Alex M. Sokol, 94, of Lenexa, KS passed away January 6th, 2012. He was laid to rest in Kansas City, MO on January 14th, 2012. A memorial service and Celebration of Life shall be held on January 21st, 2012 at 11:00 AM at Mt. Moriah and Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO 64131. Mr. Sokol was born in Cleveland, OH on September 5th, 1917. He was the youngest son of Polish immigrants, and at the age of 8 began studying violin. He became an accomplished musician whose career included performances with numerous noteworthy orchestras, including the All American Youth Symphony under the direction of conductor Leopold Stokowski, the Glen Miller Band with Tex Beneke, the Cleveland Philharmonic, Kansas City Philharmonic, the Civic Orchestra, 25 years with Starlight Theater in Kansas City and many more. He served his country in the United States Air Force during World War II in the Asian Pacific Theater. Mr. Sokol received bachelor's and master's degrees in music and music education from the University of Missouri at Kansas City as well as certification in special education from the University of Kansas. He taught instrumental music and special education in the Kansas City, MO School District for 35 years and developed innovative techniques for teaching physically handicapped students. Mr. Sokol was preceded in death by his wife, Maurine L. Sokol, and is survived by his 2 sons, William M. Sokol of Prairie Village, KS and Alex C.
