Mary Imogene Watkins, 95, of Kansas City, Kansas, also known as Jeanie by relatives and close friends went to be with the LORD on January 5, 2024. She passed away peacefully at home after a long battle with dementia. She was born March 25, 1928 in Gatewood, Missouri. The daughter of Everett and Lena (Tanner) Reed.
Mary leaves behind 1 Daughter - Linda and husband, Frank Nelson. 1 Granddaughter - Angela and husband, William Tate Jr. 1 Great-Granddaughter - Kristin and husband, Cody Underwood. 1 Great-grandson - Nickolas Tate.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Buck Watkins, her only brother, Charles Reed, and her parents Everett & Lena (Tanner) Reed.
Mary helped make history in Wyandotte County, as one of the first five Meter Maids hired for the KCKS Police Department in 1962. She later worked for Communications and Auto Theft. She retired from the Police Department in April, 1990. Prior to working for the PD, Mary was Vice President of the P.T.A., Room Mother and Campfire Leader at Central Elementary School. Mary and her husband Buck, joined Maywood Community Church in 1980.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday January 27, 2024 at 11:00 am at the Maywood Community Church, 11201 Parallel Parkway in Kansas City, KS 66109.
Memorial donations may be made to Phoenix Homecare and Hospice of Overland Park, KS.
Graveside service for friends and family will be announced at a later date.
