Cathy Sue Butler passed away peacefully at the age of 74, on September 1, 2023, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the oldest of three children, born April 20, 1949, in Kansas City, KS, to Anna Mae and Ernest Lundine.
Cathy graduated from Wyandotte High School in 1967. She was a member of the National Honors Society, yearbook committee and synchronized swim team. She was a talented artist who could draw or paint anything imaginable. Beyond drawing and painting, she was extremely creative and used her creativity to bring joy and happiness to others.
After graduating from high school, Cathy went to Kansas State University where she studied interior design. Her career took off as a travel agent and she grew to be one of the top meeting planners in the country. Cathy traveled the world and saw the most amazing sites. Meeting planning wasn’t just a job for Cathy; she thrived on making events spectacular and memorable for everyone.
On August 26, 1972, Cathy married James Butler in Kansas City, KS. Many memories were made in 51 years as a married couple. Together they traveled the world making timeless memories. She enjoyed cheering for Kansas State University sports teams - especially football, the KC Royals, and the Super Bowl Champions - KC Chiefs. Collecting treasured pieces of art together brought her much joy and happiness.
Cathy was the mother of two children, Kristin (Butler) Ray and Jason Butler. She spent hours sewing Halloween costumes, making cookies for school parties, decorating cakes for birthday parties, finding the perfect gifts, and lovingly surprising her children. She spent hours on the ball fields and in swimming pools being the top cheerleader for her children. There isn’t anything Cathy wouldn’t have done for them.
Over everything, her biggest pride and joy were her four grandchildren: Taylan, Mallory, Rhett, and Audrey. Everything they did to make her a “Grammy” made her proud: from baseball and football, to soccer and volleyball, to dance; Cathy loved every moment of them. She decorated Easter eggs, made cookies, always had a treat for them, went overboard at holidays for each one and cherished every hug and kiss she received.
Cathy is predeceased by her mother and father Anna Mae and Ernest Lundine, her three dogs Sebastian, Beau, and Libby. She is survived by her husband, James, her two children Kristin (David) Ray and Jason (Lisa) Butler, her four cherished grandchildren, Taylan Ray, Mallory Ray, Rhett Butler, and Audrey Butler, sister Sharon (James) Harlow and brother Ron (Paulette) Lundine, and too many good friends to count.
Funeral services will be held at Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Memorial Garden at 701 N. 94th Street, Kansas City, KS 66112. Wednesday will be the visitation from 5pm - 7pm. Service and burial will be Thursday at 10am.
