July 10, 1930 – April 28, 2016
John was born in Prince George, B.C. the third of three sons, to Roland and Kathleen Harlow. He enjoyed small town life and all the north had to offer. John enjoyed telling many stories of his youth there with summers spent fishing at Bedneste Lake, bird hunting, and his teen years working for a logging company and lumber mill.
John was a loving and actively interested Dad to his two children, Suzanne and Grant. Dad was always there for soccer and hockey, gymkhanas and ponies, boat trips camping with his kids at the Shuswap; giving time and support for whatever they chose to do. He was delighted with his grand-daughter Ariana. He also enjoyed curling, history, books, movies and holiday travel. John had a gift of writing and was a good baritone singer.
John spent his working career in all aspects of the printing and publishing industry. He married his wife Elaine in 1956 and together they journeyed south to Vancouver Island where they entered into a partnership at the Parksville newspaper. They later moved to Vancouver where he worked for Mitchell Press publishing, before moving to Kamloops in 1967 to establish a custom printing shop and then to be a co-owner and manager of The Kamloops News newspaper. He spent the last few years before retirement as publisher and manager of Teletimes.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Elaine, daughter Suzanne (Randy), son Grant (Sarah) and granddaughter Ariana, numerous nieces and nephews, plus one brother Robert (Sally).
A Memorial service will be held on Friday, May 27 at 11:00 am in St. Andrews Presbyterian Church.
Elaine, Suzanne and Grant wish to thank the staff at RIH 4 North ward for their kind help to John in his last days.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Turtle Valley Donkey Refuge, Wildlife Conservancy would be appreciated.
