Tom was born on December 20, 1949 to Thomas Howard Bertell Sr. and Barbara Louise Fiedler Bertell, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. After Tom graduated from Bethel Park High School in 1967, he went on to study chemistry at Case Western Reserve University.
After graduating with a degree in chemical engineering, he enjoyed a long and successful career as an environmental chemist in the Mid-Atlantic region. While living in Pittsburgh, PA. and working for Eastern Associated Coal, Tom met his future wife Patricia Rose Amedure. Tom and Patty were married in 1984 and began a long and happy life together as the Bertells.
In 2014, Tom and Patty retired to their beautiful home on The Island at Abacoa, Jupiter, Florida. There they spent time enjoying the area with many favorite dining spots and sharing time with their many friends, with Jumby Bay being Tom’s favorite spot. Tom also volunteered at St. Vincents de Paul in Jupiter. Tom especially loved baseball spring training games. He was also an avid football fan, a frisbee golf enthusiast and loved to go sailing when Pittsburgh friends visited.
Tom was predeceased by his loving wife Pat and his sisters, Jacqueline Bertell and Barbara Gallini.
He is survived by his brother Robert Bertell, wife Merre, their children Brittany and Nicholas, sisters Kathryn Babb, husband Michael, their children Michael and Jessica, sister Roberta Bertell and sister Shelley Bertell and her children Kristina and Rebecca. Also, his brother-in-law Gary Gallini and daughter CareyAnn, his sister-in-law Gloria Halligan, husband Richard their children Lynzee and James.
Tom had a soft spot for his cats, treating each and every one as a valuable family member. Barney, Twilight and Ellie will miss their buddy.
Services and Celebration of Life will be scheduled based on the families’ wishes. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Furry Friends, 100 Capital St. Jupiter, FL 33458, an organization that Tom felt strongly about.
