Jim and his sisters Karen and Lauren grew up in Toluca Lake with a large community of close family friends that his children would grow up calling aunts and uncles. This group of close-knit families, (The Keneallys, Murphys, Flynns, and the O’Kanes) traveled extensively together and took advantage of everything that Southern California had to offer in the 60’s and 70’s. Known to everyone as Corky, he was the quick-witted flirt who would take a risk for a laugh. He attended elementary school at St. Charles School in North Hollywood, and graduated from Notre Dame High School in 1975. He played baseball and borrowed his dad’s suits for prom. A truly all-American childhood experience.
Pursuing a career in Pharmacy, he received an undergraduate degree from UC Santa Barbra and his PharmD from UC San Francisco in 1984. During his studies at UCSF, he began working in clinical research and continued to use his creativity and passion for science in this field for his entire career. Shortly after graduating, he moved to Miami Florida where he married, and became the present and proud father of three children, Leanne, James, and Megan, watching them grow up in the ocean like he did.
He enjoyed the simple things. Riding his bike to the beach, following his favorite bands, and a poker night with close friends. Consistently learning with enthusiasm defined him. Always finding a new and interesting rabbit hole to follow. Jim was extremely easy to buy gifts for because of his endless hobbies and interests. You could have an enlightening conversation with him about anything and he would certainly make you laugh somewhere along the way. He made people laugh effortlessly, even in the smallest interaction. These are a few of the many reasons why there is such a void in the lives of those who love him. We can only hope to honor him with laughter and stories of his life.
James is survived by his son, James Nolan Kenealy IV; daughters, Leanne Kenealy Atkins (Patrick Atkins) and Megan Kenealy and grandson James Jackson Atkins.
