Ellen grew up in Grosse Pointe and graduated from Grosse Pointe High School in 1963, and married her husband David Smith in 1965. After marriage they served together in the Peace Corps. Upon their return to the United States Ellen graduated from Wayne State University with a Masters Degree in the higher mathematics. Ellen then taught at the high school she graduated from for several years.
Ellen and her husband loved sailing and in 1979, together with their two children, Rebecca and David, sailed to the Bahamas, where they spent a year exploring the out islands while living aboard and home schooling their children. Upon returning Ellen and her family settled in Annapolis, Maryland, where Ellen continued her teaching career and over the course of many years taught students at Annapolis Area Christian School and Anne Arundel Community College. Beginning in 1990 Ellen and her husband worked overseas in the Federated States of Micronesia, where Ellen joined the staff at the national campus of the College of Micronesia. There Ellen continued to teach higher mathematics, and also administrated a grant to install and establish the first web and internet system for the South Pacific island nation. Following retirement in the late 1990’s Ellen and her husband returned home to Annapolis, where Ellen worked part-time as a consultant for the NSA at Fort Meade. Ellen and her husband moved to Jupiter, Florida, in 2004.
Ellen’s family takes comfort from her life filled with professional accomplishment and personal adventure. Ellen served in the Peace Corp in Costa Rica, lived in the Bahamas, lived in the islands of the Far Pacific where she was valued by the leaders and chiefs of many islands, hiked the Blue Mountains in Australia, explored temples on Bali, sailed upon the sea of Galilee, lived like a local in Greece and Paris, and after retirement Ellen and her husband lived part-time for several years in Bermuda.
A lifelong devoted Christian, Ellen loved her church activities and bible studies, lovingly nurtured her two children, taught homeschoolers at Jupiter’s Grace Immanuel Bible Church, loved quilting, gardening, and sailing on the Great lakes and Chesapeake Bay and to ocean destinations.
Ellen is survived by her husband and loving partner David Stephen Smith, her daughter Rebecca Morani, her son David Christian Smith, her grandchildren Sarah Savage and Christopher Smith, and her elder sibling Louis Hribar.
