Colonel Dan Smith passed away suddenly on July 12, after a lengthy illness. Born September 28, 1941, in Jackson, Alabama, he grew up in Tuscaloosa. After graduating from Tuscaloosa High School, he enlisted and served as a junior Drill Instructor (Yikes!) at Parris Island. He graduated from the University of Georgia and returned to the Marine Corps as an officer.
Dan was a proud and dedicated Marine who served his country for 33 years. Retiring as a Colonel, he traded one uniform for another and volunteered at various National Parks for many years. A passionate sports enthusiast, Dan enjoyed sport parachuting, scuba diving, water skiing, skeet shooting, and bicycle racing. His charisma and lively personality captivated everyone around him…he was the life of the party prior to his illnesses.
Dan is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pat; daughters Ginny (Bill Wellmaker) and Meredith(Kenny Parton); 5 grandchildren: Trey (Ashley ), Emily, Alison (Chris), Paige, and Luke; 4 great-grandchildren: Jackson, Presley, Hampton, and Cace; his sister, Juanita; and brother, Joe.
Dan will be greatly missed but will remain forever in our hearts.
