Edith Charlene Schombs, age 84, of Johnson City, Tennessee passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2024 at her residence. She was born in Miami, Florida, a daughter of the late Charles Altschul, Jr., and Edith Adler Cook. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather who raised her, Wayne E. Cook; and one sister, Sandra Denise O’Brien.
Charlene attended Tusculum College and was a Customer Service Agent with Bell Atlantic Phone Company. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Coral Gables, Florida and had attended First Presbyterian Church in Johnson City. She served with a group of ladies at the Salvation Army, and she had previously served at the Children’s Home in Greeneville, TN and Guardian Ad Litem in Miami, Florida. Charlene was a volunteer at Fairmont Elementary where she was known as Grandma Charlene to the children. She loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
She is survived by two daughters and one son-in-law, Stacey Ayers and Mary Beth Fishbein and husband Bruce; two grandsons, Dakota Ayers and John Wayne Fishbein and wife Yesenia; two granddaughters, Beth Mack and husband Dave, and Rachel Fishbein; four great grandchildren, Esmeralda Fishbein, Bruce Wayne Fishbein, Izaiah Ortiz and Mia Mack; one niece and several nephews; and special friends, Lee and Ann Marie Schwartz, Robin Albury, Dessie Phillips, and Evelyn McCloud.
A Committal Service and Interment will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024 at 12:00PM in Section F at Monte Vista Memorial Park with Rev. Paul Helphinstine officiating.
The family would like to extend their thanks to members of the Johnson City Fire Department Station 5, Amedisys Hospice, and Cornerstone Home Health CNA’s for all the love and care that was shown.
