Joan V. (White) Mahoney was one of 8 siblings in Indianapolis. She cherished close relationships with each of her brothers and sisters. Joan was married for nearly 62 years to John T. Mahoney, both of whom resided in Kendallville, IN, and they enjoyed their beach condo in Jensen Beach, FL, during the winter months. Joan is survived by her husband, John T. Mahoney; her four children, Kathleen Mahoney, John Mahoney, Christine (Mahoney) Krehl, and Stephen Mahoney; 13 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
Over the years, Joan forged numerous great relationships with many people, but her most prized relationships were with her girlfriends. She valued these relationships and taught us all how important they are and how to maintain them. Her influence in this area was profound, and she worked tirelessly to maintain these relationships.
She had a sharp wit but not a sharp tongue. Some of our most fond memories are of the camaraderie we witnessed with these friends –she had many. She could laugh with you and at herself. She was a great listener, was easy to be around, and made everyone feel welcome. As her children, we relished the opportunity to “hang” with our parents, which often led to a good time. When we grew up, hanging out with our parents and their friends was always fun. Our best memories are sitting, laughing, and telling stories with her and Dad’s friends.
One of Joan's greatest attributes was being an excellent host; she did so with relish. She deeply loved gatherings and celebrations, and her enthusiasm was infectious. As many know, Mom would host many parties and family get-togethers. July 4th was a special time that we would join together to celebrate her birthday. It would be a busy time where everyone would gather and enjoy being together and watching the fireworks. The stories we would recount were numerous and mostly hilarious. If she taught her children anything, it was to love one another and forgive the little things.
She planned her life with her husband and always had a full calendar of events. Golf was an excellent catalyst for a full calendar. She also enjoyed traveling and seeing the sights of the world. Many of these trips were enjoyed with friends or family.
She was a saver, and not only did she allow each one of her children but also her grandchildren the opportunity to pursue higher education. This gave each of us a foundation to hone our futures. She was fierce when it came to her children. She helped shape four independent warriors who became entrepreneurs, free thinkers, and strong people of character who could make her proud -- most of the time…IYKYK.
A Celebration of life will be held during 2025 season in Jensen Beach.
